Casey Joanna Brooks, We Will Never Forget

I was so inspired by Casey's friends’ tributes that I wanted to do my own. My video starts with our first photo of Casey at 10 mos. (not looking very happy), to our first "date" with her in Poland in July, 1991 when she was 14 mos. old, moving to Simsbury, CT and onto Tiburon. The photos are from me and some of Casey’s friends, as well as some self-portraits that Casey took. The music was carefully selected, and each song, title or lyric has special meaning. We start with 3 female singers who died too young - Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Janice Joplin, followed by the ubiquitous ice cream truck jingle that would prowl our neighborhood in the summer. Then onto contemporary tunes from my time, from John Lennon to the Dead (no self respecting Marin County kid would pass up the Dead) and Pink Floyd; most of these have cross-over appeal to Casey and her friends. Then onto her contemporary favorites including Radiohead, Bay Area rapper Andre Nickatina and Cyprus Hill, wrapping up with our beloved local boys and girl, the Itchy Mountain Men who, of course, Casey adored. Lastly a teaser from the Beatles.

Other Videos

This is a collection of videos dating back to our first meeting with Casey in July, 1991 in Poland. You can also view them on my Facebook page. I’ve also included more recent videos that relate to the good work that has been done to raise awareness for the issue of suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Whose Shoes?

This was an exhibit put on by the Bridge Rail Foundation in September, 2008 of over 1,300 shoes in Crissy Field in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. The shoes represented the toll of suicides from the bridge since 1937

please don’t jump

In the summer of 2010, an anonymous postcard appeared on PostSecret, a blog that displays secrets mailed in by postcard. The postcard was from an illegal alien contemplating suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge. Within 24 hours, a Facebook group titled “please don’t jump” was created, attracting over 20,000 people with messages of support and understanding for those who feel like they are at the end of their rope.

Bridge Healing Ceremony

To celebrate the 2010 summer solstice, Dana Barks, whose only child Donavan leapt from the bridge little more than 2 weeks after Casey, hosted a healing ceremony for other who’d lost loved ones from the bridge at Baker Beach.

Please Stop Golden Gate Bridge Suicides Once and For All

This is a piece I did for Casey’s 21st birthday. It was both a personal editorial on the continuing tragedy of Golden Gate Bridge suicides as well as a video remembrance of Casey.
